WTO Invites Inputs for the World Trade Report

Sisule F. Musungu - On 28th January 2010 the World Trade Organization (WTO) announced the launch of a web discussion forum to stimulate debate and discussion on the topic of the next World Trade Report “Trade in Natural Resources: Challenges in Global Governance”. In the announcement, the WTO Secretariat promises to take into consideration all the inputs received through the forum.

While the result of this experiment will only be known after the release of the Report in July 2010, it is a significant step by WTO to open up a discussion and invite broader inputs into its flagship publication. One hopes that researchers, academics, negotiators, civil society, industry and other stakeholders will step up to the plate and enrich the debate and discussions. This step is also symbolic in terms of governance when one considers recent concerns about the science on flu pandemic at the World Health Organization (WHO) and on Climate Change.

    Dear Sir/madam

I was an Expert (with a Group of Professors from Africa’s French-Speaking Countries between 2003 and 2006 )of the « World Trade Organization’s Institute on Technical Assistance » in the field of Trade and Investment.

Actually, I think that some African Countries such as Angola, Gabon depends on Trade Exportation of some Natural Resources. The important problematic issue of Trade and Global Governance deserves discussion between all stakeholders in the Framework of both WTO/and also UNCTAD ? However and as we know, WTO and UNCTAD are both Intergovernemtal Economic Organizations. Last september 2009, WTO organized a Civil Society ‘s Public Conference. It’s an important model of a democratic Governance in which NGO,researchers etc. participate. Thus, the current debate on the topic of the next World Trade Report (of WTO)consitues another step towards a democratic Governance. In short, I hope that also UNCTAD join this important Approach already initiated by WTO’States Members.

P.S. I am a Professor of International Economic Law of Development at the Faculty of Law/University of Marrakech in MOROCCO. Let me mention that I am an expert of UNCTAD, since 2003 untill now, in the field of International Investment Agreements.
