Research Associate

Mrs. Nupur Chowdhury, University of Twente, The Netherlands

Mrs. Chowdhury, an Indian national, is a PhD candidate of the Department of Legal and Economic governance Studies School of Management and Governance of the University of Twente. Previously, she was an Associate Fellow and Area Convenor, Science and Technology Area of the Resources and Global Security Division at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in New Delhi, India. She trained as a lawyer with a specialisation in environmental law. She has researched extensively on the issues of natural resources law, intellectual property rights and biodiversity and technology (biotechnology and nanotechnology) regulation in a developing country context. More recently she has worked closely with climate change issues with a focus on development and implementation of the clean development mechanism in India, and the issues under negotiation in the Committee on Trade and Environment at the WTO. She was also an adjunct faculty member at the TERI School of Advanced Studies and lectures on biodiversity, wildlife, forestry law and international environmental law. 

Mrs. Chowdhury is a member of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) Research Group, McGill Law Faculty from Canada, and a member of the editorial team of International Law in Domestic Courts (ILDC), Oxford University Press. She is also a reporter on WIPO for the American Society of International Law-Report on International Organizations (ASIL-RIO) project.

Mrs. Chowdhury holds a Masters of Laws (LL.M.) in Public International Law from the International and European Law Programme of the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam, Holland, a Bachelors of Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Delhi, in India, and a diploma on Environmental Law from the Center for Environmental Law, WWF, in India. She has published several papers on issues surrounding environment and intellectual property.
