Thiago Luchesi, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva

Mr. Luchesi, a Brazilian national, is a PhD Candidate in International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland. He is also a practicing Intellectual Property (IP) and International Law attorney in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His doctoral research is on the fragmentation of the international IP system and the conflict of international norms. His doctoral research focuses, in particular, on how the phenomenon of regime shifting may result in the creation of conflicting international IP norms, and how such normative conflicts can be resolved.

In the last years, Mr. Luchesi has been an observer of negotiations held at the World Intellectual Property Organization, on behalf of Brazilian NGOs. He was also an intern at the Innovation and Access to Knowledge Programme (IAKP) of South Centre, Geneva.

Previously, Mr. Luchesi worked in Brazil as a researcher in the Intellectual Property Group of the Brazilian International Trade Law and Development Institute (IDCID), where he participated in the “Cupuaçu” case, which resulted in the cancellation of a trademark for the name of the Brazilian typical fruit unduly registered in Japan. His experience with IDCID also allowed him to work on a joint project in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on access to essential medicines and the protection of public health through the use of the intellectual property system.

 Mr. Luchesi holds a Masters in International Relations and International Law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies and Development, Geneva, a Masters of Law from the University of Sao Paulo Law School, as well as a Bachelor of Law from the Catholic University of Sao Paolo (LL.B). His mother tongue is Portuguese, he is fluent in English and French, and has a good understanding of Spanish.
